I have just purchased an old antique oil, but don’t know what I have. Anyone help me identify?
The painting is oil. It is very old. You can tell by the paper wrap and the wire from which it is to be hung. You can actually see the swirls of the brush in it’s oil. The painting consist of alot of people in white wigs under a chandelier, playing flutes. The time period appears to be around the George Washington era with the way the figures are dressed. The lady I purchased it from said she had purchased it to display in her historical home and had made the buy from an antiques and collectible show fifteen years ago. I have searched the internet, and can’t seem to find anything like it. It is framed. Does anyone have any idea of what type painting I may have? You can tell the painting is very old, but it is in excellent condition. I can’t seem to find the artist inscription or signature anywhere on it.
It might be worth photographing your picture and contacting one of the big Auction houses – Christies, Sothebys e.g. and asking for a valuation (they first require photos). The do valuation for free in the hope that if you sell, you will sell through them.
