What type of finish for cabinet knobs will stand the test of time?
I’m working on a little project to update an old china cabinet of mine. Aside from the new stain I am changing the hardware on it. I’m going with something silver in colour but I am having a hard time determining what will be able to handle some wear and tear. We use the cabinet several times a day. We used to have ‘brushed nickel’ knobs in our old kitchen but I found after a year or so of use they started to show a lot of wearing in the color. Now I wasn’t sure if it was just those particular knobs or if ‘brushed nickel’ knobs had a tendency to show wear and tear quickly. Options that I have been considering are:
o Brushed Nickel
o Stainless Steel
o Chrome
o Pewter
With that said, do all ‘brushed nickel’ knobs wear with time, or was it just the particular knobs I bought that I had problems with? Also, out of the above options is there one that will stand the test of time better then the rest? Appreciate any advice I can get on this.
MANY of these cabinet fixtures are made of cheap “base” metals with a “finish” coated on the surface. ALL of these finishes will wear and show it.
The ONLY handles on which the finish will NOT wear off are those that are made of SOLID material in which the material and color are homogeneous/continuous through the entire piece.
I therefore suggest that the most durable fixtures are the Stainless Steel and Pewter [IF they are "SOLID"], and IF the Chrome plated fixtures are made by a QUALITY manufacturer, then they also should have good longevity.
