Can anyone help with a carpentry question?
I am planning on building a work bench in my garage. Currently, my plans are to have the work bench mounted on hinges connected to the wall with two legs that are also mounted on hinges so I can fold the bench up to be flush with the wall and down to become a work area. That part of my design has been simple. But the second part is what I need some help with. I would like to have a shelf underneath the top surface of the bench. Although, I don’t want to shelf to fold up. I would like it to be able to move with the bench, but not collapse. I have a simple drawing I can send if anyone can’t envision what I am describing. If anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it. Thanks to all in advance.
One of the easiest ways is to hinge the work bench surface to the wall, have part of the work bench surface lip out say one foot (so that part is always sticking out from the wall), with a hinge attached between it and the rest of the work bench top, and have a permanent shelf attached to the top of the work bench where the shelf is one foot below it. As you say the legs would also be twice hinged appropriately (or have extendable legs, or separately attached legs to accomodate the folding process with the shelf).
Another way would involve making an alcove into the wall to accomodate the assembly, where the depth of the alcove would be at least as deep as the distance between the top of the work bench and the bottom of the shelf below it.
