How to fix a jammed door knob?
The door knob on the front door of my house is jammed. It turns (slightly) but the metal part that should slide back when the knob is turned, is not moving. I removed the knob and tried to manually pull back the part (the part inside the knob) but it barely moves. Any suggestions? Even if I go out and get a new knob, how will I get that inside part off?
Remove both doorknobs, which will also remove the stem which is attached to the outside part. Next look inside, and see the “D” shaped hole. jam a screwdriver into the D, and turn it. This will allow the door to open. Now use the screwdriver to take out the 2 screws in the edge of the door, and the slide part (bolt) will come out. Leave someone at home for security, and take all the parts with you to buy a new one. When installing the new one, look carefully at the bolt assembly — when it’s put into the door, the D hole should be in the center of the doorknob hole. If not, take the bolt assembly out, and look for the adjustment. After reassembly, try the knob and key before closing the door. If the key won’t work, disassemble and flip the stem one half turn, then reassemble. Tighten firmly, but don’t get too industrial with it.
