Birch wood or maple for a skateboard?
I know maple is normally better than birch, but is birch really that bad? The only reason I’d be getting it is because it’s cheaper, and the maples I’ve seen are pretty expensive.
If the board is going to be for riding you will need to go with 7 ply Canadian Maple. It is possible to make a decorative or light-riding board out of birch, but maple will be lighter, stronger and last a LOT longer. It’s an investment, but as a guy who has made about 25 skateboards for personal use and friends, I think that maple is a great investment.
