What You Need to Consider Before Investing in Your Front Doors

Replacing the front doors of your home is a great investment but it’s so important to get it right as they are very often the first thing that a visitor notices when they approach your home. They set the tone, personality and style of the whole house. To make sure that you choose the perfect one for your home, check out the guide below.

Choose the right material

One of the most important things to consider when making your choice is to select the right material. Your door needs to be able to hold up against all weather conditions and enhance the outside of your property. Many older ones are made of solid wood or wood veneers which tend to warp, crack and divide into thin layers after years of exposure to the elements. The natural look of wooden doors is still a popular choice and they are now being engineered to resist the elements and last longer. Steel and glass are also good alternatives as steel is a very strong material and glass can be made with double layering to add strength. MDF is also an option but although this material is more economical, MDF is not known for its durability.

Choose a front door which is sympathetic to the style of your house

It’s important to choose a door which matches the architectural design of your home. If you live in a Victorian terrace for example then a traditional wooden door would complement the rest of your property. If you live in a city centre apartment however, then you might decide to go for a more contemporary look with a modern steel door. These small details do make a difference to the overall look of your home. It’s also important to consider the finish that you want. This really depends on personal taste and what your preferences are. If you prefer a wood stained finish to a painted look then bear in mind that it would need to be maintained every couple of years to keep it looking fresh.

Custom made or pre-made front doors?

There are many pre-made and pre-hung doors available on the market. Pre-hung doors hang on hinges within a new frame and these are often a good choice if your existing frame is wearing out or if you want to enlarge the opening of the front door. Before you invest in one of these, you need to determine whether you need a left or right hand door – if the lock is on your right when you are facing the outside then you have a right hand door for example. If you have a particular style requirement then a custom made door might be the better option but they do take longer to make and can be more expensive than pre-hung doors. To get the exact look you want you would need to work closely with the company providing the door however, they can really make the focal point of your home and exude style.

Choose the right company

It’s important that you visit a number of DIY stores or specialist workshops to get a sample of prices. When you are researching into the right company for you, you should also speak to friends and family and see if they can give you any recommendations. Another good idea is to browse the internet for a list of local manufacturers and craftsmen.

With these top tips you can make sure that you invest in the perfect front door for your home.
