Weatherby Vanguard Sub-MOA Stainless Steel finish .300wsm?
The gun is brand new from the manufacturer, when I checked the website they had it listed for about $1,200 without tax. This particular model is obsolete through the manufacturer though. They still make the Vanguard Sub-MOA in the matte black version though.
How much is a gun of this brand, style, and caliber worth, if it is discontinued through the manufacturer?
The Weatherby Vanguard is a great gun, and the Sub-MOA gets attention, but what that entails is the rifle shoots well with the load they have used at the factory for it,being clamped down, and they are “Cherry Picking”the ones that shot best groups. Will it shoot Sub-MOA with Winchester factory ammo, or Remington Cor Lokts, or Hornady InterBonds ,or a Federal load-you have to try each one and find out. the other thing is do you have the skill and optics to put a Sub-MOA rifle to it’s best advantage? A Vanguard/Howa 1500 isn’t an expensive rifle at base price, the stainless is going to up the amount, but normally only $100 or so. I have Browning A-Bolts in 30-06 and 300 WSM (no BOSS systems) that shoot Sub-MOA,factory stock with average optics and a sand bag rest-because I hand load for them. My friends who hand load get similar results from 223 to 375 H&H loads, in a variety of rifles from old 1903s and 1917s to CZs and even a Remington 770 and amazingly a 45-70 Pedersoli Sharps Black powder rifle. You don’t need to spend $1200 on a rifle to get Sub-MOA groups, but if you want to spend money like that start looking at Sako 85s or Kimbers, not Remingtons or Weather Vanguards. The T/C Venture and Tikka T3 guarantee MOA for $500 or less, and for most hunting applications that is plenty. If you are thinking long distance target shooting, the Weatherby is a good solid base to start from, uses a forged rectangular receiver instead of machined round stock, but most people in that case would just buy the action and get an aftermarket barrel. You can go for the Weatherby Vanguard Sub-MOA and pay the cost-someone has to cover advertising and media budgets;I’d rather get a good scope and reloading equipment and make every rifle I have shoot best possible accuracy.
EDIT: Jason, if you already purchased it and are looking to recoup your cost then you might get $800-$900,from someone looking for that particular gun and is going to bite as hard as you did on the hype. My son’s single shot H&R 243 isn’t quite MOA (for him),but he can certainly get 20 shots within a 3-4 inch circle at 100 yards-not bad for a 12 year old. The rifle and scope were less than $300.
